Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre, a multi-million pound healthcare development, has been given the green light, with construction of the new building set to start this autumn.

Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre, a collaboration between Aspull GP Surgery, OneMedical Group, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) and NHS Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group, is set to combine the existing Aspull Clinic and Aspull GP Surgery on Haigh Road, replacing the current offering with a state-of-the-art health and wellbeing centre in the heart of the local community.

As well as providing a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including a modern GP surgery and pharmacy, Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre has been designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all patients. This design was achieved by working closely with Aspull Surgery and local stakeholders to create a building that is future-proofed and user-friendly to all.

The development, which is set for completion in Summer 2022, will be a phased process to enable current patients to continue to receive vital services throughout the programme.

Dr Johannes van Spelde, GP Partner at Aspull Surgery, said: “The GPs and staff at Aspull Surgery are all delighted planning permission has been granted and that we can finally start to build our new Health and Wellbeing Centre, which has long been needed.

“The new building will allow us to provide even more services to the local population of Aspull in a bespoke healthcare environment. Aspull Surgery and Partners would like to reassure patients that all our services will continue throughout the duration of the build.”

Rachel Beverley-Stevenson, Executive Chair and Property Director at OneMedical Group, said: “I’m thrilled that we’re moving on to the next stage of this project, in partnership with Aspull Surgery, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), and NHS Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group and working closely with Wigan Council.

“It’s been exciting to hear from people in Aspull about how important the new health and wellbeing centre is to the community. We’re grateful for their support and looking forward to bringing the whole scheme to life, including a community orchard and enhanced car parking.”

Dr Tim Dalton, GP and Chair of NHS Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group said:

“We are delighted to have reached this important milestone with planning permission being granted for the new health and wellbeing centre in Aspull. The new centre will house a number of services, including the GP practice and community services. I’d like to reassure patients and residents that we have plans in place to ensure there is as little disruption as possible once building works start. The GP practice will remain open whilst building works are complete and the phlebotomy community services will move into the practice until the new building opens. It is fantastic to be working so closely in partnership with Aspull Surgery, OneMedical Group and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust on the development of this new modern facility for the residents of Aspull”

Silas Nicholls, Chief Executive of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “This marks an important milestone in a very exciting project and as a partnership with Aspull Surgery, Wigan Borough CCG, Wigan Council and OneMedical Group, we all look forward to seeing the plans become a reality over the coming months.

“We understand that this will change the way WWL services are delivered during the project. Working with Aspull Surgery, our teams have put alternatives in place to make sure our patients continue to receive the care they need. When the new Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre opens in summer 2022, all our services will resume in one place.

“Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre is going to provide people in the local area with access to the healthcare they need in a modern, welcoming and joined-up setting – a facility to be truly proud of.”

Paul Wainwright, Director of QAD Architects, said: “It has been a pleasure to work alongside such a forward thinking and enlightened client team on this project to develop a primary care facility that will offer such excellent functionality – both now, and with flexibility to adapt in the future.”

During the build process, WWL’s phlebotomy Community Services will be based in a consulting room at Aspull Surgery, with podiatry services available at Longshoot Health Centre in Scholes, whilst the District Nurses service will be based at Chandler House within Worsley Mesnes Health Centre.
